From explaining space science to letting students explore it

The ExoSSAM project began through an education network conversation. The goal was to turn topics like planets, gravity, and space exploration into a Roblox world where students could move, experiment, and play.

METAMATE translated ExoSSAM's science content into exploration, missions, minigames, and classroom operation support tools.

1. Challenge: Students can hear the concept, but may not feel it

In science classes, students can hear that gravity differs across planets, but it is harder to experience what that means. The same applies to planetary environments: images help, but direct movement and decision-making are more memorable.

The key questions were:

  • How can each planet's characteristics become gameplay rules?
  • How do we keep students from getting lost during class?
  • How can teachers manage students while the game is running?
  • How do we preserve the learning objective while keeping the game engaging?

2. Solution: Translate planet concepts into missions and movement

METAMATE turned each concept into action rather than text. Students move through planetary spaces, complete missions, and play minigames while encountering the science concepts.
